# Glyceraldehyde 3-Phosphate --- **Glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate**, sometimes called just **glyceraldehyde phosphate** is an intermediate in [[glycolysis]]. In the normal course of glycolysis, [[glucose 6-phosphate|fructose 6-phosphate]] is cleaved into two molecules of glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate[^1]. [^1]: Actually it's cleaved into glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate and a different molecule, which is then [[isomer|isomerized]] into glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate. Glyceraldehyde phosphate is an important intermediary during [[gluconeogenesis]], because it can be formed from [[glycerol]], from our stored triglycerides. Conversely, it can become glycerol. This is the pathway for how excess dietary [[carbohydrates]] can be stored as [[adipose tissue]]. ![[glycolysis.png]] %%this line intentionally left blank%%
